It's Wild Salmon Day – a chance to celebrate a fish that sustains whole ecosystems and human communities, but is now classed as endangered. Scotland once welcomed huge runs of Atlantic salmon, returning from the sea to rivers that ran cool beneath corridors of alder, willow and aspen. Salmon rely on cold, clean water to survive.
